🏰news | features + short tasting note IN ENGLISH
【The 1996 Domaine René Engel Vosne-Romanée is a classic expression of this esteemed Burgundy appellation, known for its purity and characteristic Vosne spice.】 The 1996 vintage in Burgundy was generally characterized by high acidity, which can make some wines challenging, but Engel's Vosne-Romanée often shows good concentration and aging potential. This Pinot Noir displays a medium ruby color, with a nose that evolves from undergrowth and deep spicy notes to black fruit and eventually dominating raspberry. On the palate, it is very fresh with forward acidity, showing reasonably concentrated red cherry fruit, and tannins that finish with a little unintrusive grain. While some notes mention a challenging acidity, others highlight its lovely aromatics and a long, elegant finish with fresh raspberries, cherries, and Asian spices.

This mature Vosne-Romanée would be exquisite with classic Burgundy pairings such as roasted game birds (e.g., pigeon or pheasant), duck confit, or a delicate beef carpaccio. For a more luxurious pairing, consider truffle-infused dishes or aged Gruyère cheese.
🥂 fit for event suggestion IN ENGLISH
An excellent choice for a special occasion, a contemplative evening, or a vertical tasting of older Burgundy wines. It's a wine that rewards patience and careful appreciation. Given its age, expect some sediment; decanting is highly recommended to allow the wine to breathe and separate from any deposits. The cork and capsule should be handled with care, as older wines can have fragile closures. Serve at 16-18°C (60-64°F) to best appreciate its complex bouquet and mature flavors.
BACKGROUND
Domaine René Engel was a Burgundy producer known for making some of the top examples of Pinot Noir in Vosne-Romanée, France. The domaine remained in the Engel family for three generations until the death of Philippe Engel in 2005. The domaine's vineyard holdings spanned a total of around six hectares. In 2006, René Engel's vineyard holdings were purchased by François Pinault, owner of the renowned Château Latour, and Domaine d'Eugenie was formed.
