FEATURES
The 1988 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru hails from a good vintage in Burgundy, characterized by excellent quality for reds due to favorable summer weather and an early harvest. While initially a bit rustic, these wines have matured beautifully, offering a wonderful opportunity to experience quality aged Pinot Noir, with the best examples still evolving. DRC, widely considered 【Burgundy's most famous estate, producing celestial wines】, acquired its current plot in Romanée-Saint-Vivant in 1988, though they had been crafting wine from this Grand Cru vineyard since 1966. The vineyard's deeper, clay-rich soils contribute to the wine's distinctive character. Critics have praised this vintage, with Burghound.com rating it 92 points for its purity of expression and outstanding length. Robert M. Parker Jr. gave it 90 points, noting its massive constitution and rich extract, while Jancis Robinson awarded 17 points, highlighting its depth and fine tannins.
This mature Romanée-Saint-Vivant presents a light, brownish, and bright ruby red color. The bouquet is complex and fragrant, offering ripe red fruits, subtle floral, and spicy notes. On the palate, it reveals a perfect balance between silky tannins and lively acidity, with flavors of raspberry, cherry, and a hint of smokiness. CellarTracker notes from 2024 describe an evolution from initial dusty notes to bright red fruit perfume, stemmy characteristics, red licorice, raspberry cola, a hint of watermelon, black tea, and tobacco leaf, with moderately chewy oak tannins that are beginning to soften.
Given its age, this wine is ready to drink and offers a profound experience. Old corks and capsules can be fragile, so consider using an Ah-So opener or a Durand. For serving, stand the bottle upright for several days to allow any sediment to settle. It's advisable to taste a small amount first (around 16°C) to assess its condition. If significant sediment is present, a careful, gentle decant just before serving is recommended to separate the wine from the sediment, avoiding excessive aeration if the wine appears delicate. Serve at approximately 16°C.
🍴 This exquisite Pinot Noir pairs wonderfully with classic Burgundian dishes such as duck, goose, or other game birds. A CellarTracker user found it to be a perfect pairing with seared grouper. It would also complement roasted poultry or mushroom-based dishes.
