FEATURES
The 2020 Almaviva marks a significant milestone as the 25th-anniversary bottling of this prestigious Chilean estate. This exceptional red wine is the fruit of a renowned joint venture between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Viña Concha y Toro, blending French winemaking expertise with Chile's unique terroir. The 2020 vintage was characterized by a particularly dry season, with significantly less rainfall, leading to concentrated berries and an earlier harvest. The blend consists of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Carmenere, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, aged for 20 months in new French oak barrels. Critics have lauded it as "exceptional," praising its abundant fruit, freshness, density, and tension. It's noted for being enjoyable in its youth while possessing remarkable aging potential.
Tasting Notes: It displays a ruby color. The aroma is rich and dense, offering notes of blackberry and blueberry jams, interwoven with tobacco leaves, and intriguing hints of curry powder and green bell peppers. On the palate, expect mellow notes of blackberry jam, black licorice, and sarsaparilla roots, with a medium body and a slight chewiness. The finish is drier, with pronounced acidity, black grape skins, and a receding sweetness. James Suckling describes a fresh and deep nose of blueberries, minty cassis, mussels, cigars, dark spice, and roasted sesame oak, leading to a medium-to full-bodied wine with supple, silky tannins and a wealth of black and blue fruit. It's voluptuous and flattering, marked by tension and a taut, very long texture.
Food pairing suggestions: Chef Arthur Leprevost suggests a sophisticated pairing with Bordeaux-style European sea bass, served with foie gras and red wine sauce, complemented by kombu seaweed and oyster leaves for freshness. More conservative pairings include lamb chops, while a more adventurous choice could be Sichuan pork.
Event suggestions: An ideal choice for celebrating significant achievements, a luxurious corporate event, or an intimate gathering of wine connoisseurs.
