The 2023 Jean Chartron Puligny Montrachet Rouge Clos du Cailleret is a truly exceptional find, representing a rare red wine from an appellation overwhelmingly renowned for its white Chardonnay. While Puligny-Montrachet is primarily celebrated for its world-class white wines, it is legally permitted to produce red Pinot Noir, though it accounts for a minuscule fraction—around 0.5%—of the total production. Jean Chartron, a distinguished producer in Puligny-Montrachet, crafts this unique Premier Cru from the 'Clos du Cailleret' vineyard, a site more commonly associated with white wines but historically also planted with Pinot Noir. 【The extreme rarity of a red Premier Cru from Puligny-Montrachet makes this a collector's gem.】
The 2023 vintage in Burgundy is characterized by abundance and charm, offering a pleasing ripeness that makes the red wines enjoyable for early to mid-term aging. It was a straightforward growing season, yielding a plentiful crop of ripe fruit, with reds described as surprisingly concentrated, aromatic, and perfumed, showcasing clean, pure aromas of blue or red berries and pronounced floral notes. Expect a wine with round, ripe fruit, ample texture, and a rich weight on the palate. While specific tasting notes for the 2023 Clos du Cailleret Rouge are still emerging, the 2022 vintage displayed delightful raspberry and alpine strawberry aromatics with a floral note and perfectly judged ripeness. The 2023 is likely to echo these characteristics, imbued with the vintage's inherent charm and approachability.
🍴 This rare red Burgundy would be a magnificent pairing for classic French cuisine such as roasted duck breast with cherry reduction, coq au vin, or delicate pan-seared scallops with a mushroom risotto. For an Eastern touch, consider Peking duck, char siu (barbecued pork), or a subtly spiced Korean galbi (short ribs).
🥂 This wine is perfectly suited for intimate, celebratory dinners or as a standout bottle at a sophisticated wine tasting event. Its rarity and unique origin make it an excellent conversation starter and a memorable gift for a discerning wine enthusiast.
