The 2013 Domaine Trapet Chambertin Grand Cru is a fascinating and challenging expression from Burgundy, picked on October 6th. This vintage is noted for its elegance and precision, with Nicolas Trapet highlighting that cooler vintages like 2013 are excellent for terroir definition. Critics like Neal Martin have praised its perfumed and surprisingly floral nose, with peony and iris complementing dark berry fruit, cola, and brown spices. Stephen Tanzer noted complex, subtle aromas of raspberry, flowers, licorice, minerals, and menthol, with a captivating restrained sweetness and terrific saline grip. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, fine depth, and structure, showing good complexity and a silky texture. It's described as having firm tannins and vigorous acidity, yet with Grand Cru complexity and texture.
【One of the over-performers in this challenging vintage】
This Chambertin Grand Cru, with its lean yet powerful black fruits and finesse, is still in its early drinking window for some, with potential to evolve for many more years, possibly until 2035-2036. It would be an excellent choice for a sophisticated dinner party, a special anniversary, or a serious wine tasting event. Its elegance and complexity make it suitable for moments requiring thoughtful appreciation.
For food pairings, consider classic Burgundian matches. Roasted game birds like pheasant or duck, beef bourguignon, or a delicate mushroom risotto would complement its earthy and fruity notes. For an Asian twist, consider a subtly spiced Peking duck or a refined Cantonese braised beef brisket.
BACKGROUND
Domaine Trapet is a wine company comprised of two estates, one in Alsace, the other in Burgundy. The company in its current dual-region configuration formed when Andrée Trapet inherited her parents' vineyards in Alsace in 2002. Her husband Jean-Louis has run Domaine Trapet Père et Fils in Gevrey-Chambertin since 1990, when he took over from his father Jean.
