FEATURES
The 2023 vintage in the Southern Rhône was a promising one, characterised by juicy, ripe fruit, relatively soft tannins, and a good expression of terroir. Despite being a hot year, ample rainfall during the growing season ensured concentration and fresh fruit flavours, with moderate alcohol levels and a pleasing acid balance, making these wines approachable in their youth. For Côtes du Rhône, 2023 is considered an excellent vintage for blending, offering wines that are full, dense, and well-balanced. Domaine Durieu, with its rich history and some vines predating the First World War, is renowned for its quality Côtes-du-Rhône wines, notably incorporating a significant proportion of Carignan grapes. The 'Pont de Pierres' truly stands out due to the Carignan, which imparts a noble and elegant character, highlighting fruit, freshness, finesse, and lusciousness.
Tasting Notes: This wine presents a deep, brilliant red hue with terracotta undertones. The bouquet is delightful, offering ripe red berries, black pepper, leather, and subtle Mediterranean herbs, complemented by clean earthy cellar floor notes and hints of fruitcake, currants, raspberry, and gingerbread. On the palate, it is medium-to-full bodied, both "powerful yet soft," with excellent balance, round, supple tannins, and a fresh acidity that maintains vibrancy despite its 15% alcohol content. Expect clarity, ripe fruit fleshiness, and a compelling drive, with distinct red cherry and black plum notes.
Food pairing suggestions: This is an excellent all-rounder, pairing beautifully with most meat dishes. Specifically, it is a superb match for beef, lamb, and game such as venison.
Event suggestions: An "easy to drink" wine, making it ideal for casual gatherings, barbecues, or a hearty weeknight dinner. Its approachable and versatile nature makes it perfect for sharing with friends and family.
