The 1983 Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Rouge is a testament to the longevity and complexity of well-aged Northern Rhône Syrah. Now four decades old, this vintage has retained remarkable vigor, offering a wonderful bouquet reminiscent of Burgundy, with wilted rose petals infusing shimmering dark cherry and raspberry fruit. Hints of rooibos, Earl Grey, and clove emerge with time. The palate shows impressive body and a gentle grip, with tannins that have melted beautifully over the years. Robert Parker, who shared a sentiment for the 1983, noted its profound concentration of ripe, smoky, berry fruit and Asian spices, full body, exceptional depth and length, and a formidable tannin level, anticipating maturity from 2003-2025. Despite its age, some bottles have been described as drinking like silk. 【 Profound concentration of ripe, smoky, berry fruit and Asian spices 】.
For a wine of this venerable age, careful handling is key. Expect a softish cork and some sediment. Decanting for about an hour is recommended to allow the wine to breathe and separate from any deposits. Serve at a slightly cool cellar temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F), to best appreciate its evolved aromas and flavors.
🍴 Food Pairing: This mature Hermitage Rouge would be exquisite with classic French cuisine such as slow-cooked lamb shoulder, beef bourguignon, or aged hard cheeses. Its earthy and spicy notes would also complement game birds or truffle dishes.
🥂 Event Suggestions: A truly special wine for a milestone anniversary, a significant birthday celebration, or an intimate gathering of serious wine connoisseurs. It's a wine that invites contemplation and appreciation of its history and evolution.
BACKGROUND
Domaine Jean-Louis Chave is a powerful wine producer headquartered in the village of Mauves in the Saint-Joseph region, across the Rhone River from Hermitage. It owns about 14.5 hectares (36 acres) of land and grapes. The terraced estate now covers eight different plots on the hill, providing a range of mesoclimates and terroirs for Chave wines. Many of the vines are between 30 and 60 years old.
