FEATURES
The 2012 Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Rouge is celebrated as a particularly charming and forward-drinking vintage, showcasing a classic profile that emphasizes fruit without compromising on structure. It's noted for its remarkable liveliness, pep, and freshness, making it an exceptional wine in the making. Jean-Louis Chave himself highlighted that the 2012 vintage would be a "classic Hermitage with an emphasis on fruit, not structure, but not lacking in structure at all—just compared to, say, 2010 and 2005."
This Hermitage Rouge displays a mostly opaque purple color. On the nose and palate, it offers classic crème de cassis and blackberry fruits, intertwined with nuances of lead pencil shavings, violets, and powdered rocks. Additional notes include new-leather, ripe cherry, dark berries, spice-accented cherry and cassis, cola, candied licorice, red fruit, floral pastille, and a peppery element. It is full-bodied, exceptionally smooth, with excellent concentration and freshness, and perfectly balanced acidity, leading to a very long finish.
Food pairing suggestions: This robust Syrah-based wine is an ideal match for rich, savory dishes such as roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, game meats like venison, and hearty stews. It also pairs wonderfully with aged hard cheeses.
Event suggestions: While still quite closed and benefiting from cellaring until at least 2025, this wine is perfect for a significant celebratory dinner, a sophisticated wine tasting, or as a centerpiece for a gathering of discerning wine enthusiasts. It has been described as a "total crowd pleaser" that can be enjoyed now with a proper decant.
