FEATURES
The 2001 vintage in Châteauneuf-du-Pape experienced significant flooding late in the summer, which led some to not consider it a "top vintage." However, the Hommage à Jacques Perrin from this year turned out remarkably well, showcasing more complexity than many more recent vintages. This wine is a proprietary blend, typically dominated by Mourvèdre (around 60%), complemented by Grenache, Counoise, and Syrah. It is renowned for being incredibly backward and almost impenetrable in its youth, demanding considerable aging to reveal its full potential.
In the glass, this wine displays an opaque and bright purple color. The nose is complex, offering notes of plums, cedar, raspberries, black olives, meaty undertones, and a hint of stewed fruit. On the palate, it delivers concentrated flavors of plums, raspberries, subtle black cherries, and roasted herbs, all supported by good acidity. Further complexity can include new saddle leather, melted asphalt, camphor, blackberries, smoky, roasted herbs, Asian spices, cassis, blackberry paste, plum reduction, bittersweet Valrhona chocolate, and brooding tar notes. It is full-bodied, dense, thick, and sappy, with profound black fruit and mineral characteristics.
