🏰 The 1971 Château Fortia Châteauneuf-du-Pape hails from an excellent Rhône vintage, producing wines known for their 【elegance, power, and remarkable aging potential】. This particular bottle, at over 50 years old, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing a fully mature yet lively color and a healthy old-wine nose with vinous depth and hints of barley sugar. The 1971 growing season in the Southern Rhône, despite a challenging start, benefited from a hot, sunny summer, resulting in Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines that were rounder and fuller-bodied. On the palate, expect a velvety texture with perfectly integrated acidity, light flavors of herbs, and a juicy sweetness, all contributing to a gentle, elegant profile with no signs of decay. It's a testament to the longevity of well-made Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
🍴 This mature Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a sublime pairing for classic, rich dishes that complement its evolved character. Think slow-braised lamb shank, roasted game (like venison or wild boar), or a hearty cassoulet. It also pairs beautifully with aged hard cheeses or dishes featuring truffles and earthy mushrooms.
🥂 This rare 1971 vintage is perfect for a significant anniversary, a milestone birthday, or a special gathering of connoisseurs who appreciate the beauty of aged wines. It's a journey through time in a glass.
*Kindly reminder: For wines of this venerable age, the cork and capsule may be fragile. Handle with care. Serving this wine at around 15.5°C (60°F) will allow its delicate aromas to unfold gracefully. A gentle decant for 30 minutes to an hour, primarily to remove any sediment, is recommended, but avoid prolonged aeration to preserve its fragile nuances.*
BACKGROUND
Chateau Fortia is one of the older estates in Chateauneuf du Pape. In fact Chateau Fortia can date itself all the way back to its humble beginnings as a Southern Rhone Valley farm in 1763. Chateau Fortia was one of the larger vineyards in the region by the mid to late 1800’s. The property takes its name from the founder of the estate, the Marquis de Fortia.Located not far from the Chateauneuf du Pape village the 30 hectare vineyard is planted to grapes to produce both red and white wine. 2.5 hectares are devoted for white Chateauneuf du Pape, while the remaining 27.5 hectares are used for the production of red wine. Even though most of their vines are in one large parcel, the soils are varied. They have a terroir of sand, clay, limestone and large rocks in their soil. The vineyard is planted to mostly Grenache with Syrah and a bit of Mourvedre.
