The 2017 M. Chapoutier Châteauneuf-du-Pape Barbe Rac is widely regarded as brilliant and among the finest vintages to date for this particular cuvée. This exceptional red wine is crafted entirely from Grenache grapes sourced from a single lieu-dit known as Barbe d'Asne, and is traditionally aged in concrete tanks. The 2017 vintage saw exceptionally low yields, which contributed to the wine's almost black hue and its "crazy-concentrated" character. It is a powerful, rich, and age-worthy wine that requires several years of bottle maturation to fully express its potential.
On the nose, it offers a gorgeous bouquet of kirsch liqueur, ground pepper, garrigue, and graphite. The palate is deep, rich, and powerful, brimming with sweet fruit. It also boasts incredible floral aromas of roses and violets, complemented by ripe cherry and stone fruit flavours, and exotic spice notes. With its lush, integrated tannins, this wine promises a long and rewarding evolution.
🍴 This powerful and concentrated Châteauneuf-du-Pape is an ideal partner for robust dishes such as roasted lamb, beef Wellington, rich stews, game meats like venison, or strong, aged cheeses.
🥂 【Considered one of the finest vintages to date for this cuvée, showcasing exceptional concentration from low yields.】 The 2017 Barbe Rac is a serious, age-worthy wine, perfect for a grand dinner, a significant celebration, or for cellaring to enjoy its magnificent evolution over the next two decades or more. It is a wine for those who appreciate the profound depth and complexity of a top-tier Southern Rhône red.
BACKGROUND
Maison M. Chapoutier is one of the most recognizable producers in the Rhône Valley. It is known for its wines from both the north and south of the valley, but in particular for its red and white Hermitage wines, made from Syrah and a blend of Marsanne and Roussanne, respectively.Outside of the flagship vineyards in Hermitage, Chapoutier has vineyards across the Rhône, including plots in Côte Rôtie, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Condrieu. These span both single-vineyard expressions and generic AOC-level wines. Chapoutier also makes regional Côtes du Rhône wines, and has viticultural interests in Australia (Domaine Tournon), Portugal and Alsace.
