FEATURES
Bernard Faurie is a revered figure on the Hermitage hill, representing the fifth generation of winemakers tending to vines, some of which are over 100 years old. He meticulously works his vineyard following organic principles. His parcels are spread across the esteemed Hermitage terroirs of Bessards, Méal, and Gréffieux. Bessards and Méal are particularly renowned for producing some of the longest-lived wines. Faurie firmly believes that true Hermitage must include fruit from Bessards, a granite bedrock stronghold. The 2017 Hermitage Bessards, often a blend like "Greffieux Bessards," benefits from the rocky (granite) seam of Gréffieux, contributing juicy, perfumed fruit, which harmonizes with the structured, mineral-etched fruit of Bessards. The Bessards terroir itself, a steeply terraced hillside with southwestern exposure and sandy gravel over granite bedrock, imparts both structural muscle and aromatic purity to the wine. The winemaking involves 100% whole bunch fermentation in old wooden vats for 18-21 days, followed by aging in used oak (for 2017, one 600-litre demi-muid and one 228-litre used barrique). The wine is unfined and bottled by hand, with only a minuscule amount (50-100 dozen) produced annually. This wine is 100% Syrah.
While specific 2017 tasting notes are scarce, the wine is expected to embody the characteristics of its prestigious terroir and Faurie's traditional winemaking. It should offer structural muscle and aromatic purity, with juicy, perfumed fruit. Bernard Faurie's Hermitage wines are known for being powerful yet fine, possessing intensity and depth rather than overt flair. The finesse of its tannins and its consistent, graceful aging ability are hallmarks. Expect a full-bodied, strong, and flavorful red wine. 【From 100-year-old vines in storied Hermitage parcels, handcrafted for exceptional aging】
