The 2016 Rayas Chateau des Tours Rouge Reserve hails from a vintage that, while warm, produced wines of significant power and intensity. This red blend, primarily featuring Grenache, Syrah, and Cinsault, is often lauded for its remarkable resemblance to the more prestigious and expensive wines of Château Rayas itself, offering a taste of that pedigree at a more accessible price point. 【Rayas-like profile at a more accessible price point】.
Expect a rich and intense experience with notes of dark berries, blackcurrants, and ripe red fruits like strawberry and raspberry jam, complemented by hints of licorice, dark herbs, and a touch of gamey musk. Some tasters have noted a chocolate-like richness and even a menthol bitterness on the finish, with a voluptuous, full-bodied palate and silky tannins. Given the wine's intensity and the vintage characteristics, a lengthy decant, potentially up to 24 hours, is highly recommended to allow its complex aromas and flavors to fully unfold.
🍴 This robust red is a superb companion for hearty dishes. Think roast lamb, gamey meats, a perfectly seared steak, or slow-braised beef with a rich red sauce. Its structure and depth can stand up to bold flavors.
🥂 Ideal for a special dinner party where a powerful and complex Southern Rhône red is desired, or for an intimate gathering with fellow wine enthusiasts looking to explore a wine with a distinguished lineage without the top-tier price tag. It's also a fantastic choice for celebrating milestones with a well-aged, characterful wine.
BACKGROUND
Château Rayas is a leading producer in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation of the Rhône Valley, France. It is one of the region's most prestigious estates, and its wines fetch some of the highest prices in southern France. The estate covers 22 hectares, with 15 hectares dedicated to vineyards. Most of their vines are planted to Grenache. The estate's red wine is made solely from Grenache. The château's white Châteauneuf-du-Pape is generally made from Grenache Blanc and Clairette in roughly equaly proportions. Château Rayas has been in the Reynaud family since the 1880s.
