FEATURES
Domaine de la Grange des Pères is a highly esteemed estate in Languedoc, founded by the late Laurent Vaillé, often referred to as the "Mozart of wine". Vaillé trained under legendary figures like Gérard Chave and Jean-François Coche-Dury, quickly establishing a cult following for wines of remarkable finesse and ageing potential. The 2016 vintage in Languedoc was excellent, marked by warm, dry conditions balanced with freshness, resulting in wines of concentration and aromatic clarity. This particular vintage is a complex blend of 40% Syrah, 40% Mourvèdre, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Counoise, reflecting the estate's signature balance of power and elegance. The grapes are hand-harvested and undergo minimal intervention during fermentation, followed by approximately 24 months of ageing in a mix of new and older oak barrels. The 2016 has been highly acclaimed, with scores in the mid to high 90s, and one critic lauded it as 【a monumental wine with remarkable depth, precision and ageing potential】.
The wine presents aromas of blackberry, cassis, garrigue herbs, spice, and earthy minerality. It is deep in color with a youthful yet well-defined bouquet of black cherries and Provençal herbs, hinting at Côte-Rôtie gaminess. The palate is powerful and refined, featuring firm, polished tannins and a long, persistent finish. Expect pliant tannins framing layers of generous black fruit intertwined with wild mint and cassis, all contributing to a velvety smooth texture that conveys classicism with expressive Mediterranean flair. Notes of crushed-berry, earth, and chocolate character are also present, leading to a full-bodied, decadent finish.
🍴 Food pairing suggestions include roast lamb, game, grilled meats, and rich Mediterranean dishes. It also pairs well with beef, veal, and pasta.
🥂 This wine is drinking well with decanting but possesses significant ageing potential, capable of evolving for another 15-25 years. It is suitable for a celebratory dinner, a serious wine tasting, or cellaring for future enjoyment, particularly as it still suggests needing another three or four years to fully develop its complexity.
