FEATURES
Philippe Foreau, representing the third generation of the Foreau family, and now alongside his son Vincent, continues the esteemed tradition of crafting exceptional Vouvray wines. The domaine's 11.5 hectares of Chenin Blanc vineyards are strategically located in the northeast corner of Vouvray, benefiting from mid-hill sites with south/southeast/southwest exposures. Key vineyards include Les Perruches and Les Ruettes. The winemaking philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention, with grapes tended organically, vines replaced via massale selection, and fermentation occurring in mostly aged 300-liter barrels using only natural yeasts. Malolactic fermentation is avoided, and sulfur dioxide use is minimal, resulting in wines renowned for their crystalline purity and remarkable aging potential. The 2001 vintage was from a moderately rated Loire vintage.
In its youth, the 2001 Vouvray Sec showed a rather shy nose with typical antique wax notes, but less prominent quince or other fruit and floral aromas. The palate was linear, crisp, and well-focused. However, a 2015 tasting noted superb beeswax and quince notes integrated with juicy acidity, demonstrating excellent tension, aromatic expression, and length. With air and slight warming, the wine evolved, becoming more complex and expressive, revealing floral notes and even a subtle hint reminiscent of botrytis.
Food pairing suggestions include barbue fish with spicy vegetable preparations, overripe goat cheese, omble chevalier (a deep lake fish of the trout family), and Selles-sur-Cher goat cheese. It also pairs well with vegetarian dishes, poultry, rich fish, and mild, soft cheeses.
This 2001 Vouvray Sec, with its age and complexity, is ideal for a contemplative tasting among connoisseurs or a special anniversary dinner. It's a wine that truly rewards patience and appreciation for its evolved character.
For a wine of this vintage, the cork might be fragile; consider using a Durand or Ah-So opener. Gentle decanting is recommended to allow the wine to breathe and to separate any sediment, ensuring the delicate aromas are preserved. Serve slightly chilled, ideally between 10-12°C (50-54°F), to best appreciate its nuanced profile.
