FEATURES
The 2020 Domaine des Closiers Les Coudraies Saumur-Champigny is a compelling red wine from a relatively new but ambitious producer in the Loire Valley. The estate is actively converting to organic viticulture and benefits from the consultation of Nady Foucault, formerly of the iconic Clos Rougeard. This particular wine is a single-vineyard expression from selected parcels on limestone slopes in Parnay. The grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, and sorted, undergoing a cold pre-fermentation maceration before fermentation and aging in stainless steel vats, with a portion (20% for this vintage) in barrel to maintain purity and freshness. The 2020 vintage is noted for its ripe, easy warmth, contributing to a superior quality wine.
Expect a deep and concentrated bouquet of dark fruits like sour cherries and blackcurrant, complemented by notes of mint and dark chocolate. Aromas of red and black cherries, cigar wrapper, a touch of tree bark, soil tones, juniper berry, cedar, and a smoky topnote also emerge. On the palate, it is full-bodied, round, and intense, showcasing substantial, dense, and generous fruit with good mineral freshness and spicy, supple tannins. The finish is long and promising, though it can be a little astringent in its youth. 【A promising new producer with consulting from Nady Foucault of iconic Clos Rougeard, producing a high-quality, structured Cabernet Franc from limestone soils.】
🍴 Food pairing suggestions: This Cabernet Franc pairs excellently with beef and venison, prime rib, roast white meats, braised dishes, meaty fish, and even pizza or red sauce pasta.
🥂 Event suggestions: A versatile red wine suitable for dinner parties, especially those featuring richer meat dishes. Its structure and aging potential (drink 2024-2036) mean it can be enjoyed now with decanting or cellared for further development.
