Tempier, Bandol La Tourtine, 2008
Red
750ml
Label : Good Label
Level : Neck Level
Capsule : Good Capsule
The 2008 Domaine Tempier Bandol La Tourtine is a truly sensational expression of Mourvèdre, showcasing pristine purity and phenomenal density. This vintage, reviewed by Jeb Dunnuck in June 2011, is noted for being more polished and suave than other cuvées, offering loads of black raspberry and creamy black fruits alongside smoked earth, crushed flowers, tobacco, and underbrush aromas and flavours. While serious and even austere on opening, it greatly benefits from decanting, revealing a full-bodied palate with an elegant texture and fine tannins that lead to a long, structural finish. Over time, the darker, spicier core of youthful Bandol has evolved into reddish fruit and a touch of minerality, with notes of raspberry, leather, and animalistic spices. Expect a clear red colour with a brown outer ring, and a nose that can range from vanilla to macerated grapes, or even the deep animal essence of Mourvèdre with hints of horse sweat and saddle leather.
Serving advice for this older vintage (18 years old): This wine is beautifully aged, but older vintages can be delicate. Expect some sediment, and consider using an Ah-So opener for potentially fragile corks. Decanting for at least 2-4 hours is highly recommended to allow the wine to fully open up and express its complex aromas and flavours. Serve at around 16-18°C (60-64°F).
Food pairing suggestions: This is a lovely food wine, excellent with grilled lamb and blue cheese.
Event suggestions: A perfect choice for a Valentine's Day celebration or any occasion calling for a truly exquisite and evolved red wine.
BACKGROUND
Domaine Tempier's 'La Tourtine' is a single-vineyard Bandol sourced from a high-altitude, sun-drenched parcel. Dominated by Mourvèdre, it is a wine of immense concentration, featuring dark fruits, licorice, and spices, with a structure built for decades of aging.
