The 2011 Clos de la Coulée de Serrant Savennières hails from a truly iconic vineyard, owned by Nicolas Joly, widely recognised as the 'Godfather' of biodynamic wine. This unique 7-hectare site in the Loire Valley boasts its own appellation, a testament to its singular terroir and history of viticulture dating back to 1130 A.D.. The Chenin Blanc vines, aged between 35 and 80 years, are planted on steep schist and quartz slopes, with Joly employing draconian yields and long indigenous yeast fermentations to craft this exceptional wine.
On the nose, expect a developing bouquet of ripe and tart orchard fruit, such as bruised Golden Delicious apple, lemon drop, and marmalade, complemented by notes of white flowers, clove, Marcona almonds, lanolin, and a distinct minerality. The palate is dry with high acidity, mirroring the aromatic complexity, and finishes long with a 'wooly' texture. This is a special bottle that is drinking beautifully now and has the potential to evolve gracefully through 2036. 【One of the longest-lived white wines in the world with its own appellation and biodynamic pioneer Nicolas Joly at the helm】.
🍴 Food pairing suggestions include rich, aged cheeses like Cantal affiné, Salers, or old Comté, as well as creamy freshwater fish dishes and poultry.
🥂 This wine is perfectly suited for a contemplative tasting experience or a significant celebration, allowing its complex layers to unfold. Given its age, handle with care and consider decanting to allow its full aromatic spectrum to emerge. Nicolas Joly himself suggests that his wines improve over several days once opened.
