🏰 The 1994 Bordeaux vintage was a challenging year, yet Château Léoville Las Cases, known for its exceptional terroir and meticulous winemaking, managed to produce a wine of notable quality. While not a blockbuster vintage, diligent producers on the Left Bank, particularly in Saint-Julien, crafted wines that offer classic Bordeaux characteristics. This 1994 Léoville Las Cases, now with significant age, typically displays a bouquet of dried red fruits, cedar, tobacco leaf, and earthy undertones, with hints of truffle and leather developing over time. The palate is often medium-bodied, with resolved tannins and a persistent finish, showcasing elegance and a savory complexity that only comes with age. 【A testament to Léoville Las Cases' ability to excel even in challenging vintages, offering classic aged Bordeaux character.】
🥂 This mature Bordeaux is ideal for a contemplative evening, a special anniversary, or a tasting focused on the evolution of fine wines. It's a wine that invites reflection and appreciation of its journey through time.
Serving Advice for Old Vintages: Wines of this age can be quite fragile. Stand the bottle upright for several days before serving to allow any sediment to settle. Handle with extreme care to avoid disturbing the sediment. A Durand or Ah-So opener is recommended for old corks, which can be brittle. Decanting is often beneficial to separate the wine from sediment and allow it to breathe, but do so gently and immediately before serving to preserve delicate aromas. Be mindful of the old capsule, which may be fragile or corroded.
🍴 This aged Saint-Julien pairs beautifully with classic French cuisine such as roasted lamb with herbs, beef tenderloin, or mature hard cheeses. Its savory and earthy notes would also complement dishes featuring mushrooms or game birds.
BACKGROUND
Château Léoville-Las Cases is an estate in the Saint-Julien appellation of Bordeaux, ranked as a second growth in the 1855 Classification of the Médoc and Graves. The estate has a history dating back to the mid-17th century, when it used to be part of a much larger estate. There are 98 hectares (242 acres) of vineyards, planted with 66 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, 24 percent Merlot, 9 percent Cabernet Franc and 1 percent Petit Verdot. The vineyard's soils are mostly gravel over sand and clay, with some areas where the clay reaches the surface. The proximity of the Gironde moderates weather extremes, lowering the risk of frost and allowing grapes to ripen earlier than vineyards further inland. The vines are on average 40 years old.
