The 1992 Chateau Cos d'Estournel is considered one of the stars of its vintage, showcasing an atypically ripe, concentrated, and impressively endowed character. This Second Growth (Deuxieme Grand Cru Classé in 1855) from Saint-Estèphe is known for its slow revelation, hinting at exotic spices and distant lands.
Tasting notes reveal a ruby colour with a garnet rim. The nose offers aromas of anise, figs, tobacco, spices, and a faint minty freshness, with some critics also noting cassis and a hint of 'old stinker' or tobacco. On the palate, it presents fresh acidity and ripe tannins, with flavours of figs and dates, an elegant texture, though some find it a bit lean and starting to dry out. It's described as velvety-textured and medium to full-bodied.
Food pairing suggestions include beef and venison.
This wine is a sophisticated choice for a special dinner or a gathering where a mature, classic Bordeaux is appreciated. As a wine over 30 years old, it requires careful handling. Older corks can be fragile, so consider using a Durand or an Ah-So opener. Decanting is recommended to separate any sediment and allow the wine to breathe, but a shorter decanting time might be preferable to avoid over-oxidation, given its age.

BACKGROUND
Cos d'Estournel is a vineyard and winery in the Saint-Estephe appellation of the Medoc. istorically, the Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant grand vin has had a high percentage of Merlot compared with other Medoc growths, although this has lessened in recent years. The new winery, which was built in 2012, has four vats which can be lifted to allow processes to be gravity-fed. The grand vin is matured for 18 months in new oak barrels; Les Pagodes sees 12 months in new oak whilst Marbuzet rouge are matured in 50 percent new wood. Annual production of the various wines varies between 200,000 and 380,000 bottles.
