FEATURES
The 1969 Domaine de Montille Volnay Les Champans 1er Cru hails from a vintage in Burgundy that was considered fine and superior to the two preceding years, producing wines of excellent quality, sometimes even surpassing the 1966s. The growing season saw good weather in April, a mixed June, and a superb July and August, allowing grapes to ripen well. This Pinot Noir wine is known for its red fruit notes like cherry, red fruit, and strawberry, alongside earthy, mineral, and mushroom characteristics. Older vintages of Volnay from Domaine de Montille, particularly from the Hubert era, were known for being austere in their youth but built to age, offering elegance and terroir-transparency.
【 A fine and superior Burgundy vintage, built for extended aging 】. This is a truly venerable wine, embodying the classic, terroir-driven approach of Domaine de Montille. Wines of this age can be delicate and require careful handling. The cork and capsule may be fragile, so use a Durand or an Ah-So opener if available. For serving, stand the bottle upright for at least a week to allow all sediment to settle. Decanting is highly recommended, but proceed with caution; a very old wine might fade quickly. Decant just before serving, or pour directly into glasses, allowing it to open up in the glass. Serve at a cool cellar temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F).
This wine is ideal for a very special anniversary, a milestone birthday, or a contemplative tasting among serious Burgundy collectors. It's a wine for reflection and appreciation of history.
🍴 Food pairing suggestions include classic Burgundian dishes such as coq au vin, boeuf bourguignon, or roasted game birds like duck or goose. For a Western pairing, consider a truffle-infused pasta or a delicate lamb loin. An Eastern pairing could be a subtle mushroom hotpot or a light soy-braised pigeon.
