The 2002 vintage in Burgundy is highly regarded, with many wines showing excellent aging potential and a beautiful balance. Domaine des Comtes Lafon, renowned for its world-class Chardonnay, also produces highly sought-after Premier Cru Volnay in limited quantities. The winery, managed by Dominique Lafon, has adopted organic and biodynamic practices since the late 1990s, focusing on expressing the typicity of each cru. The 2002 Volnay Santenots du Milieu 1er Cru is described as a medium-bodied red with a lovely open, generous bouquet of vibrant red fruit, such as redcurrant and raspberry, with hints of wild hedgerow and perhaps pine cone. On the palate, it is harmonious and luscious, with tannins beginning to soften after a decade in bottle, and a creamy yet weightless feel. Despite its age, it often presents as youthful with fresh acidity and a wealth of fruit, still evolving and showing great energy.
【A benchmark of Volnay elegance and longevity】 from a biodynamic pioneer. This wine is drinking beautifully now but still has significant aging potential. While the cork and capsule should generally be in good condition for a 2002, always exercise care. A standard corkscrew should suffice. Decanting for 1-2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully express its complex aromas and flavors, especially given its continued evolution. Serve at 16-18°C (60-64°F).
🍴 This refined Volnay pairs exquisitely with roasted poultry like duck or guinea fowl, pan-seared game birds, or a delicate beef tenderloin. It also complements mushroom-based dishes, truffle pasta, or mature, mild cheeses.
🥂 Perfect for a celebratory dinner, a sophisticated tasting event, or as a thoughtful gift for a Burgundy connoisseur.
BACKGROUND
Domaine des Comtes Lafon is a wine producer in Burgundy, France, making some of the most lauded (and highly priced) white wines from Chardonnay in the region. The primary grape variety is Chardonnay, with a small portion being Pinot Noir. The estate is located in Meursault in the Côte de Beaune subregion, but has vineyards in three other villages: Chassagne-Montrachet, Volnay and Monthélie. Comtes Lafon's house and cellar were built in 1869 by the Boch family, but its reputation as a winery was most heavily influenced by Jules Lafon, who married Marie Boch in 1894.
