The 2002 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault Charmes 1er Cru is a white Burgundy that has garnered significant critical acclaim, with scores often in the 93-95 point range. 【This vintage is noted for its excellent balance of maturity and refreshment, showcasing a classic Meursault style that many producers are now moving away from】. It's described as a dense wine, typical for its terroir, and was noted to be entering its drinking window around 2012. Reviewers have praised its vibrant and energetic fruit, layered complexity, and precise balance. The wine exhibits a light straw color and offers a bouquet of rich orchard fruits like pear and melon, with hints of apple and a crisp minerality. As it ages, notes of buttery texture, popcorn caramel, and toffee can emerge, alongside a lovely freshness and bright acidity. Some tasters also detect wet stones, citrus, lemon, grapefruit, and even a touch of liquorice. The finish is often described as long and bright.
🍴 Food Pairing: This elegant white Burgundy pairs beautifully with roasted chicken or turkey. Its buttery and complex profile also makes it an excellent match for richer seafood dishes, creamy risottos, or even mature, mild cheeses.
🥂 Event Suggestions: This 2002 Meursault Charmes 1er Cru is perfect for a sophisticated dinner party or a special celebration where a truly expressive and well-aged white Burgundy is desired. It's also an ideal choice for a wine tasting focused on mature Chardonnay from Burgundy, offering a glimpse into a classical style.
BACKGROUND
Domaine des Comtes Lafon is a wine producer in Burgundy, France, making some of the most lauded (and highly priced) white wines from Chardonnay in the region. The primary grape variety is Chardonnay, with a small portion being Pinot Noir. The estate is located in Meursault in the Côte de Beaune subregion, but has vineyards in three other villages: Chassagne-Montrachet, Volnay and Monthélie. Comtes Lafon's house and cellar were built in 1869 by the Boch family, but its reputation as a winery was most heavily influenced by Jules Lafon, who married Marie Boch in 1894.
