Des Comtes Lafon, Meursault Genevrieres 1er Cru, 2001
The 2001 Domaine des Comtes Lafon Meursault Genevrières 1er Cru is a distinguished white Burgundy, renowned for its exceptional Chardonnay wines and minimal intervention winemaking approach. This vintage, from a producer recognized as one of the top in the Mâconnais, emphasizes quality, elegance, and minerality. Robert Parker rated the 2001 Meursault-Genevrieres at 92 points, describing it as oily-textured, lush, and medium-bodied, with a fabulous mouth-feel. It conquers the palate with satiny layers of ripe white peaches and pears, offering a fresh, pure, and long finish. Other notes mention almond paste scents, light-floral citrus notes with a hint of smoke, evolving into a beautiful mineral-driven wine that is weighty yet elegant. Some tasters also find notes of butter, hazelnut, and asparagus, with a rich, spicy style that remains fresh and has years to go. 【Fabulous mouth-feel with satiny layers of ripe white peaches and pears】. While some older bottles might show more developed honey and brûlée notes, the wine generally maintains a core of exotic fruits and richness.
🍴 Food Pairing: This elegant Meursault is versatile. While specific pairings for this vintage are not widely listed, Meursault wines generally pair well with rich seafood, poultry in creamy sauces, roasted chicken, and various cheeses. Its minerality and acidity can also complement dishes with earthy notes.
🥂 Event Suggestions: An excellent choice for a celebratory dinner, a sophisticated wine tasting, or a special anniversary. It's a wine that demands attention and is perfect for connoisseurs looking to experience a well-aged, complex white Burgundy.
BACKGROUND
Domaine des Comtes Lafon is a wine producer in Burgundy, France, making some of the most lauded (and highly priced) white wines from Chardonnay in the region. The primary grape variety is Chardonnay, with a small portion being Pinot Noir. The estate is located in Meursault in the Côte de Beaune subregion, but has vineyards in three other villages: Chassagne-Montrachet, Volnay and Monthélie. Comtes Lafon's house and cellar were built in 1869 by the Boch family, but its reputation as a winery was most heavily influenced by Jules Lafon, who married Marie Boch in 1894.
