Denis Mortet, Gevrey Chambertin En Champs Vieille Vigne, 2001
The 2001 Domaine Denis Mortet Gevrey-Chambertin En Champs Vieille Vigne comes from a highly respected producer whose wines are considered mythic among connoisseurs of authentic Burgundy. The 'En Champs' lieu-dit is located on a gentle slope at the foot of the Premier Cru Les Champeaux, known for its varied terroir and full exposure to the rising sun, allowing grapes to ripen fully and earlier. This 2001 vintage, from old vines, is noted for its concentration and juicy fruit palate. It presents a garnet hue with aromas of blackcurrant and red fruit, punctuated by hints of earthiness, game, stems, and spices like anise and cloves. The wine is very balanced with soft tannins, fine acidity, good cohesion, and a long finish, showcasing both minerality and terroir. It's a robust and vibrant wine that has retained its freshness remarkably well for its age. 【 Robust and vibrant, showcasing minerality and terroir 】
Serving this 2001 Gevrey-Chambertin is straightforward. While it's a mature wine, it's not as fragile as older vintages. A standard corkscrew should suffice. Decanting for 30-60 minutes can help it open up and reveal its full aromatic complexity. Serve at a cellar temperature of 16-18°C (60-64°F).
Food pairing suggestions: This wine is an excellent match for gamey dishes, such as pheasants with chicory and cranberry compote. It also pairs well with veal, poultry, and other game meats. Its earthy and spicy notes would complement roasted lamb or mushroom risotto.
Event suggestions: This is a fantastic wine for a special dinner with friends or family, a celebratory meal, or a Burgundy-themed tasting. It's a wine that offers both complexity and immediate enjoyment.
BACKGROUND

The domaine currently occupies 11.2 hectares (27 acres) and has also purchased part of the Le Chambertin Grand Cru vineyard. The winery was founded in 1956 when Charles Mortet purchased a hectare of vineyard and began selling fruit to merchants. Mortet's son Denis and his wife Laurence started working at the estate in 1978 and took over and established Domaine Denis Mortet in the early 1990s.
