The 1997 vintage in Burgundy for red wines was a resilient year, characterized by an erratic spring followed by a sun-soaked but sporadic summer, demanding prompt harvest work. This led to an unusual concentration in grapes while preserving the quintessential Pinot Noir elegance. Rene Engel's Vosne Romanee from 1997 is an elegant and approachable red Burgundy, now entering its gracefully mature plateau. Expect a bouquet of spiced cherry and seasoned oak, with earthy undertones hinting at truffle and forest floor. The palate often reveals superbly integrated tannins around a core of ripe red fruits, with notes of wild plum, raspberry, and sometimes a touch of game or spicy cedar.
This wine offers a captivating palate adventure with maturation potential. 【Given the finite nature of wines born from a domaine whose torch has passed on—after Philippe Engel's untimely passing—the aura surrounding these bottles is accentuated only more.】 It's an ideal choice for collectors and connoisseurs seeking finesse over time, perfect for a special occasion. Due to its age, handle with care, as corks and capsules may be delicate. Decanting is often beneficial for older red wines to allow them to breathe and reveal their full complexity, typically for 1-2 hours, but monitor its evolution closely. Serve at cellar temperature, around 16-18°C.
🍴 Food Pairing: This mature Vosne Romanee pairs wonderfully with roasted game birds, duck confit, mushroom-based dishes, or a classic coq au vin.
🥂 Event Suggestions: A celebratory dinner, a sophisticated tasting with fellow Burgundy enthusiasts, or a quiet evening appreciating a rare and historic wine.

The domaine remained in the Engel family for three generations until the death of Philippe Engel in 2005. The domaine's vineyard holdings spanned a total of around six hectares.
