FEATURES
The 1995 vintage in Burgundy was very good, despite some tricky weather conditions. After an unsettled spring with some hail, the summer was hot and dry. September brought some welcome showers, and a small harvest resulted in intense, concentrated wines with the tannins and acidity needed for aging. Red wines from the Côte de Nuits were particularly good, and wines from top estates are likely still drinking well. The 1995 vintage produced wines with solid structure, built for aging, displaying ripe aromatic profiles and excellent long-term cellaring potential. Marquis d'Angerville is synonymous with Volnay, crafting fine-boned, elegant styles of Pinot Noir that are standard-bearers for the appellation. Their Volnay Champans 1er Cru is historically classified as a Têtes de Cuvée de Volnay, representing the archetype of a great Volnay 1er cru: finesse, fullness, and length, with an extra generosity and power unique to it. Tasting notes for the 1995 Volnay Champans describe a medium-to-dark ruby color with highly expressive cherry and mineral aromas, as well as flavors reminiscent of unctuous blueberries, strawberries, and Asian spices. It is concentrated, well-balanced, full-bodied, and refined. Some notes mention perfumed raspberry, earthy undertones, and violets.
This 1995 Volnay Champans 1er Cru is a mature wine from a very good vintage, likely showcasing a beautiful evolution of fruit and tertiary characteristics. Given its age, expect a delicate wine. Old corks and capsules can be fragile, so careful handling and a proper corkscrew are essential. Decanting for 30-60 minutes is often recommended for older red Burgundies to allow them to open up and to separate any sediment, but be mindful of very old, fragile wines that might fade quickly after decanting.
🍴 Food Pairing: This wine is an excellent match for duck, goose, and game birds. It would also complement dishes with mushroom sauce or aged cheeses.
🥂 Event Fit: 【 An ideal wine for a sophisticated dinner party or a special gathering 】 where its elegance and mature complexity can be fully appreciated. It's a wine that speaks of history and terroir, perfect for those who enjoy aged Burgundy.
