FEATURES
The Joseph Roty Gevrey Chambertin Champs Chenys 1990 hails from a renowned Burgundy producer celebrated for its rich and sensual wine style. The 1990 vintage for red Burgundy was generally excellent, producing wines known for their exceptional aging potential. While Champs-Chenys is classified as a village-level vineyard, it is highly regarded as a solid site and offers great value, particularly from Joseph Roty, whose vines in this parcel are over 50 years old. The combination of old plant material and Philippe Roty's considerable winemaking skill consistently yields superb quality. This wine is described as elegant, distinguished, and beautifully concentrated. It presents an initial burst of fruit, which is then enhanced by Gevrey's characteristic mineral finish. Drawing from notes on the 2011 vintage of the same plot, expect distinctive smoky and savage aromas, with nuances of roses, blood-like iron, underbrush, loam, blackberry, and black cherry fruit. 🍴 Classic food pairings include carré d'agneau (rack of lamb), caneton aux cerises (duckling with cherries), and levraut rôti (roasted young hare). 🥂 This is a truly special wine, perfect for a significant anniversary, a collector's tasting, or a celebratory meal featuring classic French cuisine. Its age and pedigree make it a contemplative wine for those who appreciate mature Burgundy. As a very old and potentially fragile wine, extreme care should be taken with the cork and capsule. It is highly advisable to stand the bottle upright for several days to allow any sediment to fully settle. Decanting should be done gently and slowly, perhaps through a fine mesh filter, to separate the wine from sediment. A very short decant, just before serving, might be best to allow it to open without losing its delicate, aged aromatics. Serve at 16°C. 【Prized by cognoscenti for its superb quality from old vines (over 50 years) in an under-appreciated village-level vineyard, offering exceptional value for a mature Joseph Roty Burgundy】
BACKGROUND
Domaine Joseph Roty is one of Burgundy's leading wineries with the largest cult following in the country. The family has been producing wine since 1710 and has 12 hectares (30 acres) of vines with an average age of over 60 years, producing a range of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines considered to be some of the best on the Côte d'Or. one. The core estate is none other than Joseph Rotti, himself a legend in the region who died in 2008 not only because of the quality of the wines, but also because of his reluctance to be interviewed by reporters and share details of their winemaking methods.
