FEATURES
The 1988 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie "Brune et Blonde" is considered one of the most successful vintages for this cuvée in the history of the domaine. The Rhône Valley vintage in 1988 was generally excellent, with a warm spring leading to early budburst and flowering. This wine, made from Syrah, is known for its bold and structured style. Tasting notes reveal a deep and classy nose of roasted plums, bacon fat, coffee, woodsmoke, stony soil, and a touch of lead pencil from the oak. On the palate, it is deep, fullish, and nicely resolved, with a good core, fairly gentle acidity, faded tannins, and lovely length and grip on the broad and complex finish. Some recent tastings describe it as still having lots of life left, with complex aromas of strawberry jam, new leather, blood orange, bacon fat, grilled meat, and licorice, and a delicious medium-bodied palate with bright acidity and fine-grained tannins. Robert Parker noted admirable levels of sweet, voluptuous, smoky, raspberry fruit, intermingled with scents of new oak, bacon fat, and flowers, exhibiting a precocious softness and lushness with more complexity, structure, and tannin in the finish.
Food Pairing: This Côte-Rôtie pairs beautifully with lamb. It would also be excellent with roasted red meats, game, or rich stews. For an Eastern pairing, consider braised beef with star anise or a hearty lamb hot pot.
Event Suggestions: The 1988 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie "Brune et Blonde" is a superb choice for a celebratory dinner, a gathering of serious wine collectors, or a special occasion where a mature, complex red wine is desired. It represents a classic expression of Northern Rhône Syrah with significant aging. 【A classic and successful vintage for Guigal's Côte-Rôtie】
Serving Advice: For a wine of this age, careful handling is essential. The cork may be fragile, so use a Durand opener or a two-pronged ah-so corkscrew. Decanting for about an hour is often recommended to allow the wine to open up and to separate any sediment. Serve at around 16-18°C (60-64°F) in large, Bordeaux-style glasses to allow its complex aromas to fully develop.
