The 1988 Chateau de la Tour Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is a testament to the ageability of fine Burgundy, with the vintage showing a splendid deep ruby color and a huge bouquet of jammy raspberry and cherry fruit, complemented by a judicious touch of toasty new oak and a long finish. Wine Spectator noted its sensational aromas of roses, truffles, and cherry. Burghound described it as retaining some youthful austerity while offering lovely complexity and structured flavors. This wine is just beginning to enter its plateau of maturity, still offering great length and delicious flavor. Expect complex aromas and flavors of red and black fruits like cherries and blackberries, alongside earthy, mushroom, and forest floor notes. 【A historically significant Grand Cru from the largest landholder within Clos de Vougeot, known for its ageability and complex tertiary notes.】
Food pairing suggestions: This mature red Burgundy would be exquisite with roasted game birds such as duck or pheasant, earthy mushroom dishes, classic Coq au Vin, or a selection of aged hard cheeses like Comté or Époisses.
Event suggestions: This is a superb choice for a milestone anniversary, a sophisticated tasting event focused on mature Burgundy, or a quiet, contemplative evening dedicated to appreciating a truly aged and complex wine. Given its age, handle with care. The cork may be fragile, so use a Durand opener or an Ah-So. Decanting is recommended for 30-60 minutes to allow the wine to breathe and shed any sediment, but be mindful not to over-decant, as very old wines can fade quickly. Serve at cellar temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F).
BACKGROUND
Chateau de la Tour is the largest landholder within the famous Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru and the only estate that actually vinifies and bottles its wine within the walls of the Clos. Their Clos Vougeot is known for its traditional, powerful style, requiring years of cellaring to reveal its complex dark fruit and earthy depth.
