Jacques Puffeney, Arbois Trousseau Les Bérangères, 2003
The 2003 Jacques Puffeney Arbois Trousseau Les Berangeres comes from a producer known as the "Pope of Arbois". This wine is a 【 pure Trousseau from the "capital of Trousseau" 】, Montigny Les Arsures, a prime site for this grape in Jura. The wine undergoes an 18-month aging period in casks, which allows for the development of its delicate and mature texture without being overwhelmed by oak. Jacques Puffeney retired in 2014, making his wines increasingly sought after.
On the nose, expect an earthy and mushroom character, alongside a bright floral bouquet with notes of violet, lavender, and dog-rose. The palate reveals tart red fruit, particularly cherry and strawberry, with a lean fruit profile, stiff acidity, and a tight structure. You might also find hints of medicinal herbs, light white pepper, clove, eucalyptus, and anise. It has caressing tannins and an incredible length. While the alcohol can be pronounced initially, it harmonizes beautifully after an hour or two of air.
This Trousseau pairs wonderfully with chicken and turkey. It would also be an excellent match for charcuterie, lighter game birds, mushroom-based dishes, and medium-aged hard cheeses.
This is an excellent choice for a gathering of wine enthusiasts looking to explore unique regional varietals. It's suitable for a casual yet refined dinner, especially with poultry or earthy dishes. Give it plenty of air, as it benefits from decanting to fully open up and express its charming complexity.
