FEATURES
The 2020 Domaine de la Grange des Pères Grange des Pères Rouge is a quintessential cult wine of Southern France, highly regarded by collectors. Following the unexpected passing of cult winemaker Laurent Vaillé in 2021, his brother Bernard has continued the legacy, with this being the second vintage released under his guidance. This sought-after wine from one of the Languedoc's most acclaimed domaines pairs the estate's distinctive Mediterranean character with the warmth of a generous vintage, balancing expressive fruit and spice with a notably light touch. Laurent Vaillé, who established the estate, trained under masters like Jean-François Coche-Dury and Gérard Chave. The winemaking is traditional, with each variety vinified separately using natural yeasts and long maceration, and the wines spend up to 24 months in barrel (1/3 new), with oak seamlessly integrated.
The nose practically leaps out with pure, honest fruit, layered with delicate animalistic notes, forest floor, and mushrooms. Enchanting notes of blueberries, currants, iron, and fresh leather contribute to its incredible complexity. Dark berries lead on the nose, followed by a hint of kirsch, ripe wild strawberries, and earthy notes, framed by Mediterranean herbs and spice. A subtle crushed-stone character adds a mineral edge. On the palate, it's a true revelation: velvety and full of energy, smooth and intense, and remarkably well-balanced. With increasing aeration, the nose becomes spicier, with more tobacco leaves, and the palate tauter, revealing freshness and pull. Its strength certainly lies in its elegance, with great potential to gain depth and radiance in the future.
Food pairing suggestions include grilled lamb, roast beef, herb-seasoned vegetables, red sauce pasta, roast white meats, braised dishes, gamey meats, and steak.
This wine is ideal for special occasions, impressing collectors, or a sophisticated dinner where a complex and elegant red is desired. Given its cult status and aging potential, it is also highly suitable for cellaring. Serve at around 16–18°C. A short spell in a decanter—around 30 minutes—can help the wine open up; taste as you go to preserve its freshness.
