FEATURES
The 2010 Pierre Overnoy Arbois Pupillin Cire Grise Chardonnay de Maceration is a polished white wine from the Jura region of France, specifically the Arbois-Pupillin appellation. Pierre Overnoy, along with Emmanuel Houillon, is considered a pioneer in natural winemaking, notably for eschewing the use of sulfur in his wines since 1984. The estate is renowned for its elegant yet simply presented wines, with the cuvée often identified by the color of its wax cap; white wax signifies Chardonnay. This Chardonnay is sourced from the lieu-dit Viandris, a 1.7-hectare parcel of 50+ year old vines. The white-waxed Chardonnay undergoes long aging on the lees in foudre, typically around four years, with regular topping up. Expect notes of lemon, apple, white flowers, hazelnut, and minerals. The palate is described as fresh and textured, with bright acidity and a clean finish. Reviewers also note earthy characteristics like minerals, honey, and wax, alongside citrus, apple, and nutty notes. 【A legendary natural wine from a tiny, mythical estate, known for its sulfur-free winemaking and profound character.】
🍴 This food-friendly wine pairs well with mature and hard cheeses, as well as mushrooms. Its bright acidity and mineral notes would also complement seafood dishes or roasted chicken.
🥂 This wine is ideal for connoisseurs of natural wines or those seeking a unique and expressive Chardonnay. It's perfect for a special gathering with friends who appreciate artisanal winemaking, or as a contemplative wine to enjoy on its own, allowing its complex character to unfold.
BACKGROUND
Pierre Overnoy is a legendary figure in the Jura region of France, widely considered one of the founding fathers of the natural wine movement. Taking over his family's estate in Pupillin in 1968, Overnoy championed organic viticulture and zero-sulfur winemaking long before it became a global trend. His philosophy centers on expressing the pure terroir of Jura's marl and limestone soils without any chemical intervention. The wines, particularly his Chardonnays and Savagnins, are celebrated for their profound complexity, oxidative nuances, and incredible aging potential. Today, the estate is managed by his protégé, Emmanuel Houillon, who continues Overnoy's uncompromising dedication to natural winemaking.
