The 2003 vintage in the Rhône Valley was characterized by scorching hot conditions, yet Jean-Louis Chave's Hermitage Rouge from this year is considered a brilliant expression from a challenging vintage where many other Northern Rhône producers did not shine. This wine is often described as massive, concentrated, and powerful, yet it retains energy and exceptional balance. It has evolved from a "port-like monster of its youth" to a wine with more control. Tasting notes reveal an inky/purple color with glorious aromas of crème de cassis, black cherries, licorice, crushed rocks, and flowers. On the palate, it offers tight layers of black raspberries, white pepper, and crushed rocks, with a long finish. Some bottles show maturity in aromatics of blackberries, dark currants, spice box, and leather. 【A monumental Hermitage that defies a challenging hot vintage】.
🍴 Food Pairing: While this wine is so good that food can be a distraction, it will go well with typical Rhône-style foods. Lamb is a suggested pairing. Its richness and concentration also make it suitable for other hearty meat dishes.
🥂 Event Suitability: The 2003 Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Rouge is a contemplative wine, perfect for sharing with a couple of friends. It is a singular beauty that can be drunk today with incredible pleasure or cellared for another two decades. It's a wine for special occasions and for those seeking a profound and long-lived experience.
BACKGROUND
Domaine Jean-Louis Chave is a powerful wine producer headquartered in the village of Mauves in the Saint-Joseph region, across the Rhone River from Hermitage. It owns about 14.5 hectares (36 acres) of land and grapes. The terraced estate now covers eight different plots on the hill, providing a range of mesoclimates and terroirs for Chave wines. Many of the vines are between 30 and 60 years old.
