🏰The 2001 Jean Louis Chave Hermitage Rouge is an 【elegant, sinewy vintage that is just starting to hit its stride】, described as an "easy" year by Jean-Louis Chave himself. This under-the-radar vintage continues to impress, offering an elegant, perfumed, and classical feel. Expect ethereal hints of violets and dried spices, set against a complex backdrop of redcurrants and green olives. It showcases impressive dark fruit, lavender, garrigue, and more minerality and cut on the palate. The wine is beautifully balanced, with a strong sanguine and cedar frame to notes of dried red currant, cherry pit, and red licorice, culminating in a racy iron note on the finish. It remains exceptionally youthful and still somewhat firm, with commanding minerality that promises a long second stage of life.
🍴 This legendary Syrah is a superb match for classic meat dishes. Think roasted lamb, herb-crusted pork, wild game, or beef. It also pairs wonderfully with earthy vegetarian dishes featuring mushrooms or truffles, and rich stews.
🥂 Ideal for patient collectors, as this wine should be given another 3-4 years in the cellar and is expected to shine for a decade or more after that. It's best consumed within 15-45 years after the vintage. Perfect for a sophisticated dinner party or a special occasion, serve at 15.5 degrees Celsius (60 degrees Fahrenheit) to allow its freshness and intricate perfume to fully express.
BACKGROUND
Domaine Jean-Louis Chave is a powerful wine producer headquartered in the village of Mauves in the Saint-Joseph region, across the Rhone River from Hermitage. It owns about 14.5 hectares (36 acres) of land and grapes. The terraced estate now covers eight different plots on the hill, providing a range of mesoclimates and terroirs for Chave wines. Many of the vines are between 30 and 60 years old.
