FEATURES
The 2011 Château de Fonsalette, produced by the legendary Château Rayas, is often described as a truly "magical" wine. This particular bottling is a 100% Syrah (Cuvée Syrah Reserve), with grapes sourced from vines planted between 1944-1948 and 1987. It undergoes a unique aging process, spending three months in enamel vats followed by 12 months in 450-liter casks. The 2011 vintage is considered by some to be one of the more aromatic "lesser" Rayas bottlings, showcasing the estate's unique ability to extract ripeness from its grapes without excessive alcoholic heat.
This wine is incredibly aromatic, with cascading waves of dried red fruits, rose petals, peppermint candies, garrigue, Provençal spices, and hints of funk and dank earth. Vinous (January 2014) noted its bright ruby-red color, smoky cherry, cassis, violet, and exotic Asian spice aromas, describing it as taut and sharply focused with bitter cherry and floral pastille flavors. The palate is silky and ethereal, offering both lightness and punch. Other notes include complex vanilla, spice, nuts, citrus, herbs, and a mineral complexity with good acidity. By 2023, tasting notes also revealed an herbaceous side coupled with smoked red meat, tobacco leaf, and ripe plums.
🥂 Fit for Event: This sophisticated and aromatic Rhône wine is ideal for a special dinner party, a serious wine tasting, or as a contemplative pour for those who appreciate elegant, complex reds. It's a wine that truly impresses.
🍴 Food Pairing: The 2011 Fonsalette Syrah pairs beautifully with gamey meats, braised dishes, and steak. It's also an excellent match for lamb chops. Rayas wines, with their semi-sweet notes and Mediterranean accents, often shine when paired with "feral food" that provides a counterpoint to their unique profile. Classic Rhône pairings like roasted lamb, beef stew, or strong cheeses would also be excellent choices. 【A "magical" and incredibly aromatic wine from the legendary Château Rayas, known for its unique ability to extract ripeness without alcoholic heat.】
