FEATURES
Château Rayas is celebrated as one of the Southern Rhône Valley's most revered and sought-after estates, renowned for crafting wines that are truly distinctive within the region. Under the stewardship of Emmanuel Reynaud, the estate upholds a tradition of minimal intervention, organic farming, whole-cluster fermentation, native yeasts, and aging in old oak foudres. The Fonsalette estate, located in Lagarde-Paréol within the Côtes-du-Rhône appellation, is expansive, yet only 12 hectares are dedicated to vineyards, surrounded by forests and olive groves. Its gravelly soils, interspersed with sand and some galets, contribute to more structured and savory wines, a characteristic also influenced by the inclusion of Cinsault in the blend. The Fonsalette wines are vinified in the cellars of Château Rayas. The 2010 vintage was a top year for Rayas, marked by tiny production and a very late harvest. Rayas wines are often described as atypical for Châteauneuf-du-Pape, exhibiting a delicate, refined character with a Burgundian sensibility, silky textures, and floral aromas, alongside remarkable age-worthiness. Emmanuel Reynaud prefers to age his wines for several years, releasing them only when they are ready for enjoyment; for instance, Château Rayas and Vacqueyras Château des Tours Grande Réserve are typically released at least 10 years after harvest.
The 2010 Fonsalette Côtes du Rhône, primarily Grenache with a significant proportion of Cinsault, is expected to present a deep ruby color. It offers a lovely nose of spring flowers, kirsch, licorice, earth, pepper, and spice. This full-bodied wine, with its supple tannins, is anticipated to drink beautifully for up to 20 years. Vinous Media described it as vivid red, with spicy raspberry and cherry aromas intricately woven with notes of incense, lavender, and pungent herbs. Pliant red fruit flavors are deepened by candied licorice and bitter chocolate, while bright acidity provides lift. The finish is tightly focused, energetic, and impressively persistent, leaving behind tangy mineral and bitter cherry skin notes. Jancis Robinson's notes on the components highlighted Cinsault (35% of the blend) as very pale yet sweet and rich, chewy, slightly syrupy, and aromatically evolved. Grenache Noir was noted for its rich, pungent character, great focus, and vitality, while Syrah exhibited a strong, ripe, black pepper nose, polished leather, and a light, racy profile. Additional tasting notes include dark fruits (black cherry, blackberry), leather, smoke, a hint of spice, ripe fruit (blackberry, plum), hints of chocolate, tobacco, and a subtle mineral undertone, all supported by soft and well-integrated tannins.
🍴 Ideal food pairings include rich meat dishes such as beef or lamb, and strong cheeses. Lamb is a particularly recommended match.
🥂 This is a wine for serious collectors and connoisseurs, perfectly suited for special occasions, celebratory dinners, or a contemplative tasting experience where the wine itself is the star. Given its age and exceptional aging potential, it is an excellent choice for a milestone anniversary or a significant gathering.
