FEATURES
The 1996 Joseph Roty Gevrey Chambertin Champs Chenys hails from a family-owned domaine with a rich history spanning 11 generations in Burgundy. Joseph Roty, who passed away in 2008, was a legendary figure, known for his reluctance to engage with journalists and for exporting 85% of his wines. The estate is now overseen by his son, Pierre-Jean. The 1996 vintage for red Burgundies is widely considered excellent and is drinking beautifully now. Champs-Chenys is a village-level vineyard, yet it's highly regarded for its quality, especially given its proximity to Grand Cru sites like Mazoyères-Chambertin and Charmes-Chambertin, making it a superb value. Roty's parcel in Champs-Chenys boasts vines over 60 years old, contributing significantly to the wine's exceptional character.
This wine is elegant, distinguished, and beautifully concentrated, offering an initial burst of fruit complemented by Gevrey's characteristic mineral finish. Expect distinctive smoky and savage aromas, with notes of roses, blood-like iron, underbrush, loam, blackberry, and black cherry fruit. On the palate, it presents rich, intense dark fruit, possibly blackberry and black cherry, often with a subtle dusting of cocoa or chocolatey notes, along with a perfumed quality and savory spice.
🥂 Fit for Event: This mature and highly respected Burgundy is perfect for special occasions, intimate dinners, or a serious tasting among Burgundy aficionados. It’s a wine that invites contemplation and appreciation of its nuanced evolution.
For a 1996 Burgundy, while not ancient, it's a mature wine. Expect the cork to be delicate; a two-pronged Ah-So or a Durand opener can be beneficial. Decanting is often recommended for older wines to separate any sediment and allow the wine to open up, but do so gently and monitor for signs of fading. Serve at a cool cellar temperature, ideally between 16-18°C (60-64°F).
🍴 Food Pairing: This Gevrey Chambertin pairs wonderfully with classic French cuisine. Think roasted game birds like duck or pheasant, coq au vin, rich mushroom dishes (especially those with truffles), or a selection of aged hard cheeses. 【One of Burgundy's most famous producers with old vines in a highly regarded village-level vineyard offering superb quality and value.】
