The 2003 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Musigny Grand Cru is a wine of exceptional intensity from a challenging yet rewarding vintage in 布根地. While 2003 was a hot year, Mugnier's Musigny still offers beguiling aromas of blueberries, red cherries, raspberries, violets, and roses, with an "unreal aromatic depth." It presents as medium-bodied and velvety-textured, filled with jammy red and blue fruits, lush, sensual, and plump. Some critics noted a certain meatiness and less immediate fragrance than other vintages, suggesting it would benefit from further aging to develop aromatically. 【Unreal aromatic depth and exceptional intensity from old vines】. The Musigny vines, planted between 1947 and 1962, produce an exceptionally intense wine that typically requires at least ten years of aging. This wine is considered a reference point for the appellation, showcasing the special charms of the vineyard.
Serving Advice for an older vintage (2003): For a wine of this age, handle with care. The cork may be fragile, so use a Durand opener or a two-pronged ah-so cork puller. Decanting is recommended for about 1-2 hours to allow any sediment to settle and the wine to open up, but monitor it closely as older wines can fade quickly. Serve at cellar temperature, around 16-18°C (60-64°F).
Food Pairing: This profound Pinot Noir pairs wonderfully with classic French dishes like coq au vin, roasted venison, or truffle-infused pasta. For an Eastern pairing, consider a delicate Cantonese braised abalone or a refined Japanese wagyu beef.
Event Suggestions: A truly special wine for milestone celebrations, intimate gatherings with fellow connoisseurs, or a contemplative evening appreciating a mature Grand Cru. It's a testament to the longevity and elegance of fine 布根地.
