The 2023 Domaine Trapet Gevrey-Chambertin Ostrea is already showing immense promise, with early reports suggesting it could surpass the already superb 2022 vintage. The Trapet family is notably reducing the influence of new oak, now using just one-third new wood for their Cuvée Ostrea, aiming to highlight the purity of the fruit. The 2023 harvest in 布根地 (Burgundy) began in early September, with winemakers like Pierre Trapet adapting to global warming by extending harvest times for Grand Crus to achieve optimal phenolic ripeness without excessive alcohol, partly by foregoing vine trimming (rognage). Malolactic fermentations were swift, and pH levels for the red wines are well-balanced. This particular cuvée now exclusively sources its grapes from the Clos de Combe parcel, though the familiar 'Ostrea' name is retained for consumer recognition.
This Pinot Noir displays a uniform ruby-purple hue. The nose is a significant step up, offering classier fruit with deep raspberry and bilberry notes, complemented by a touch of spice. The palate is calm, pure, and focused, with a silky texture and greater depth, revealing both red and darker fruit characteristics. It's described as fleshy and vibrant, with aromas of plums, cherries, berries, and smoke, framed by chalky tannins, leading to a really long finish.
🍴 While specific pairings for the 2023 vintage are still emerging, Gevrey-Chambertin typically excels with roasted red meats, game birds like duck or pheasant, and mature, strong cheeses. Its elegance and fruit profile would also complement mushroom-based dishes or a classic Boeuf Bourguignon.
🥂 This promising young 布根地 (Burgundy) red is ideal for collectors and those seeking a wine with excellent aging potential, recommended for drinking between 2029 and 2035. It represents an excellent value for a wine of this calibre.
【A fantastic set of wines, potentially better than the already superb 2022s, with a focus on expressing terroir through reduced new oak and specific vineyard practices】
