FEATURES
The 2023 vintage in Burgundy was notably warm and sunny, resulting in early ripening and wines characterized by concentrated fruit and a velvety texture, while still preserving the region's typical acidity. Pierre Trapet of Trapet Père & Fils observed that global warming has led to a more muscular grape structure, prompting extended harvests for Grand Crus to achieve optimal maturity. The estate adheres to biodynamic farming practices, certified by Demeter, which imbues the wine with a special vibrancy and authentic expression of its terroir. The "Les Corbeaux" climat, situated in the northern part of Gevrey-Chambertin, is distinguished by its clay-limestone soils. Trapet began bottling "Les Corbeaux" as a separate cuvée starting with the 2022 vintage. The estate has implemented significant changes since 2020, including the conversion of seven hectares to échalas and higher trellising systems. Winemaking remains classical, utilizing substantial percentages of whole clusters and aging in progressively smaller proportions of new oak, with foudres complementing barrels. The 2023 vintage is hailed as a fantastic collection of wines, potentially surpassing the already superb 2022s.
This wine displays a bright ruby red color with violet reflections. The nose offers dark cherries, raspberries, and blackberries, gracefully underpinned by delicate notes of violets, earth, a hint of spice, and subtle oak. On the palate, it is silky and elegant, featuring lively acidity, finely structured tannins, and a long, mineral-driven finish that echoes red fruits and forest floor. It is described as multi-layered and precise, embodying a classic Gevrey-Chambertin with powerful substance, combining elegance and depth, and possessing remarkable aging potential. Critics have noted a beautifully perfumed, fluid, and fruit-driven character with fewer tannins, as well as notes of dark berries, cherries, and incense, presenting a medium-bodied, supple, and seamless profile that is both charming and elegant.
🍴 Recommended food pairings include braised duck or game dishes, Boeuf Bourguignon, and mature cheeses such as Époisses or Comté. Other excellent matches are Coq au Vin, braised duck with root vegetables, saddle of venison with wild mushrooms, or classic Burgundian snails in herb butter.
🥂 This Premier Cru is a wine that demands both a discerning table and patience. It is perfectly suited for special dinners, significant celebrations, or for cellaring to allow its full potential to unfold. If consumed young, decanting for at least an hour is highly recommended.
