FEATURES
The 1980 vintage in Bordeaux was generally challenging, marked by a cool spring, wet summer, and rain during harvest. However, the 1980 Chateau Cos d'Estournel stands out as 【unquestionably a success for the vintage】. This mature red Bordeaux blend typically presents a medium ruby color with an interesting, slightly spicy and herbaceous aroma, offering well above-average fruity flavors for its year. Some tasters have noted sweet red fruit, floral hints, pencil shavings, and a touch of funk after decanting. While some recent notes suggest a tobacco and cigar-dominant nose with an acid-driven palate that might be past its peak for some, its historical significance remains. 🍴 Food Pairing: This wine pairs well with classic dishes such as beef and venison. Given its age and potential savory notes, roasted lamb or aged hard cheeses could also be excellent companions. 🥂 Event Suggestions: This is a wine for a contemplative evening or a special occasion among seasoned wine enthusiasts who appreciate the journey of an aged Bordeaux. It's perfect for a vertical tasting or a quiet dinner where its unique story and evolution can be savored. As an older vintage, expect the cork to be fragile and the capsule potentially brittle. Handle with extreme care. Decanting is highly recommended to separate any natural sediment and allow the wine to open up, but do so gently and perhaps just before serving to prevent over-oxidation. Serve at a cellar temperature of 16-19°C (60-66°F) to best appreciate its complex, aged character.
BACKGROUND
Cos d'Estournel is a vineyard and winery in the Saint-Estephe appellation of the Medoc. istorically, the Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant grand vin has had a high percentage of Merlot compared with other Medoc growths, although this has lessened in recent years. The new winery, which was built in 2012, has four vats which can be lifted to allow processes to be gravity-fed. The grand vin is matured for 18 months in new oak barrels; Les Pagodes sees 12 months in new oak whilst Marbuzet rouge are matured in 50 percent new wood. Annual production of the various wines varies between 200,000 and 380,000 bottles.
