The 2008 Le Petit Cheval, the second wine of Premier Grand Cru Classé St Emilion Château Cheval Blanc, is a testament to resilience and grace, especially given the challenging vintage conditions. The growing season was slow, but an extraordinary Indian summer led to impeccable grapes. This blend of 65% Cabernet Franc and 35% Merlot showcases a classic style, with a deep, attractive ruby-red color.
Tasting notes reveal a seductive, almost sandy bouquet with vibrant red-berried fruit, spice box, tobacco leaf, and licorice. The palate is medium-bodied, offering plum and licorice notes from the Merlot, pirouetting around the Cabernet Franc's signature raspberry and subtle herbaceous qualities. It presents fine tannins, freshness, and minerality, with a masculine and savory finish that benefits from further integration. Robert Parker notably called the 2008 "the finest second wine yet made at Cheval Blanc." 【Robert Parker's highest praise for a second wine】
Food Pairing: This elegant red Bordeaux pairs beautifully with classic Western dishes such as roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, or duck confit. For Eastern cuisine, consider dishes like Cantonese roast goose or char siu, where the richness of the meat complements the wine's structure and fruit.
Fit to Event: The 2008 Le Petit Cheval is an excellent choice for a sophisticated dinner party, a special anniversary celebration, or as a thoughtful gift for a Bordeaux enthusiast. It's approachable in its youth but also has the potential for graceful aging, making it versatile for both immediate enjoyment and cellaring.
BACKGROUND
Chateau Cheval Blanc is a property in the Saint-Emilion region of Bordeaux, classified with the top ranking of Premier Grand Cru Classe A.The vineyard is located in the northwest of the region, bordering Pomerol – La Conseillante is a neighbor – and consists of 39 hectares (96 acres) divided into 45 plots. There is an unusually high amount of Cabernet Franc planted, about 49 percent, with 47 percent Merlot and 4 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. The unusual planting proportions reflect the terroir; most vineyards in the region are either clay or gravel-based over impermeable sedimentary rock, but Cheval Blanc is unique in having a patchwork of soils with the two types in roughly equal proportions. The clay soils provide base wines with velvety tannins, while those from gravel soils are more aromatic and elegant.
