FEATURES
The 1981 Krug Clos du Mesnil Champagne is a truly exceptional Blanc de Blancs, crafted entirely from 100% Chardonnay grapes. This historic single vineyard, Clos du Mesnil, has been wall-enclosed since 1698 and was acquired by Krug in 1971. Its unique south-eastern orientation and microclimate contribute to the consistently beautiful character of its wines. Krug is renowned for producing only prestige cuvées, fermenting its Champagnes in small oak barrels, and ageing them for a minimum of 6 to 8 years, ensuring exceptional maturity and longevity. The 1981 vintage is noted for ageing effortlessly, with impressive showings even after 20+ years, developing sophisticated tertiary aromas that are more interesting than those of aged white Burgundies. 【Historic single-vineyard (Clos du Mesnil), 100% Chardonnay, aged effortlessly with sophisticated tertiary aromas.】
This Champagne displays an orange hue and offers a wonderful nose of pink roses, peach, sandalwood, quince, and Earl Grey tea. The Krug Collection 1981, a 'second life' of the original, reveals rare aromas of white truffle and sweet spices, ripe apples, and candied citrus, followed by mellow flavours of apricot and honey. On the palate, it is unctuous and generous, with remarkable volume and opulence, and an extremely long finish that retains its original freshness and vivacity. Expect subtle oxidative and tertiary notes, a burnished, resonant personality, and an open-knit, creamy texture with hints of stone fruit, vanilla, hazelnut, truffle, orange peel, brioche, and dried flowers.
The 1981 Krug Clos du Mesnil is ideal for current drinking, having reached a plateau of maturity, and stands as a testament to Krug's pursuit of excellence.
Given its age, this vintage Champagne offers a unique journey into mature flavours. Expect a more evolved profile, where the primary fruit notes have gracefully transformed into complex tertiary aromas. While still vibrant, the effervescence might be more moderate and refined. When opening, exercise extra care with the cork, as older corks can be fragile. Decanting is often recommended for older Champagnes to allow them to breathe and fully express their intricate bouquet, but do so gently to preserve any remaining delicate mousse. Serve slightly cooler than red wine but not ice-cold, around 10-12°C, to best appreciate its nuanced character.
🍴 Food pairing suggestions include fresh white fish, shrimps or lobster with light lemongrass, mango or slightly spicy sauces, carrot cake, aged Comté, autumn fruit desserts, or orange and ginger soufflé. It also pairs beautifully with shellfish, crab, and traditional French dishes like truffle-stuffed potatoes, duck foie gras, or Breton lobster soup.
🥂 Event suggestions: A magnificent choice for a significant anniversary, a connoisseur's tasting, or a truly memorable gastronomic experience.
