Bollinger R.D. 2002 is celebrated as one of the most promising vintages of the last decade. The R.D. (Recently Disgorged) concept, a vision of Madame Bollinger, involves maturing the prestige cuvée, La Grande Année, for an extended period—typically 8 to 20 years—on its lees. The 2002 R.D. notably spent an additional 39 months on lees compared to the Grande Année 2002, with disgorgement occurring in October 2013. This meticulous process imbues the Champagne with profound layers of subtle complexity while remarkably preserving its youthful freshness and vigor, offering the best of both worlds. It's considered a rare and elite release, with the 1997 being the last regular R.D. vintage prior to this. 【Recently Disgorged (RD) process, offering both complexity of age and youthful freshness, a vision of Madame Bollinger and a rare release.】
This thrilling Champagne displays a golden hue with subtle highlights. The nose is abundant with stewed and candied fruits, sweet spice, roasted notes, cocoa, star anise, and nutmeg. James Suckling awarded it 99 points, highlighting its super fresh citrus profile of lemon, grapefruit, and yellow chalky notes, alongside lighter floral elements. The palate is super dry with a silky, sherbet-like texture, powerful driving acidity, and a long finish featuring light-toasted cashew fruit and persistent lemon citrus. William Kelley of Wine Advocate rated it 95 points, noting a deep bouquet of dried fruits, orange zest, mocha, spices, English walnuts, and hazelnuts, presenting as full-bodied, broad, enveloping, with a pillowy, seamless profile and a fleshy core, culminating in a long, sapid finish. Some tasters also detect shy notes of peaches and honey, with an oily, rich texture and hints of mushroom and red apple peel.
This Champagne is designed for true gastronomy, marrying perfectly with the most refined dishes. It has been famously paired with freshly shucked oysters for a magical experience. Smoked salmon is another excellent match. Its complexity and richness allow it to complement a wide range of sophisticated culinary creations.
Bollinger R.D. 2002 is a magnificent choice for significant celebrations, exclusive fine dining experiences, or as a centerpiece for a connoisseur's tasting event. Its prestige and unique aging profile make it ideal for moments demanding an extraordinary and memorable sparkling wine. James Bond (007) would undoubtedly approve.
