FEATURES
The 1985 vintage for Barbaresco is considered superb, producing rich, perfumed wines destined for long aging. It's often hailed as the first 'modern' great vintage for Barolo and Barbaresco, where younger, experimental producers began to implement techniques like bunch-thinning and shorter maceration, resulting in wines with new levels of aromatic complexity and rounder tannins. The growing season saw a cold winter, cool spring, and a glorious summer from June onwards, with beneficial brief showers in August and September. Cool nights and warm days in early September helped maintain ripening equilibrium, leading to an early harvest of outstanding quality and a fairly large crop. Many 1985 Barbarescos are still drinking well today, offering a more accessible and softer style than other great vintages of the 1980s.
This Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco Asili Riserva 1985, made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes from the Asili vineyard, is known for its intense red garnet color with orange highlights. The nose offers complex aromas of sour cherry, dried herbs, lavender, pine, rose petals, aromatic herbs, spices, and goudron notes, with hints of Chinese black tea, smoke, tobacco, cherries, and exotic spices emerging with age. On the palate, it's full-bodied, dry, and warm, with a smooth, velvety texture, displaying concentrated cherry and raspberry flavors, balanced by lively acidity and firm, well-integrated tannins. It unfolds with remarkable intensity and complexity, reaching full maturity around now and capable of remaining so for another decade. 【 Iconic vintage with exceptional wines 】.
Given its age, this wine is best suited for a celebratory dinner or a special occasion among connoisseurs who appreciate mature Nebbiolo. It's a fantastic choice for a milestone anniversary or a sophisticated tasting event focused on aged Italian reds. When serving, be mindful of the old cork and capsule, which can be fragile. Decanting is highly recommended to allow the wine to fully express its complex bouquet and to separate any sediment that may have formed over decades. Serve at around 18°C (64°F) in large Burgundy glasses to capture its evolving aromatics.
🍴 Food Pairing: This mature Barbaresco pairs beautifully with rich, savory dishes. Think braised and stewed red meats, game such as venison or wild boar, truffle-infused pasta dishes, or aged, firm cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano or Pecorino Sardo. An unusual but delightful pairing can also be dark chocolate.
