FEATURES
The 1978 Joseph Drouhin Beaune Clos des Mouches Rouge 1er Cru is a venerable red Burgundy, hailing from a vineyard with 【mythical status for the House of Joseph Drouhin】. This Premier Cru, named after the honeybees that once foraged there, was one of the first vineyards acquired by Maurice Drouhin in the 1920s, solidifying Drouhin's reputation as a pioneer in sustainable farming. For a 1978 vintage, this wine has reached a venerable age. While it can offer profound complexity and tertiary aromas, it's also more fragile. Expect delicate fruit, earthy notes, and a softer structure. The experience can be truly unique, but it's important to approach it with appropriate expectations for an aged wine. Old corks can be brittle; use a Durand opener or an Ah-So wine opener to minimize the risk of cork breakage. Inspect the capsule for any signs of leakage or damage. Stand the bottle upright for several days to allow any sediment to settle. Decant gently just before serving, pouring slowly and steadily, stopping as soon as sediment appears at the shoulder of the bottle. Serve at around 16°C (61-62°F). Tasting notes for this aged beauty suggest a light and shiny ruby colour. Expect racy aromas reminiscent of ripe cherry, certain spices, and a discrete smoky undertone. On the palate, it offers a lovely combination of roundness, structure, and elegance. With age, these wines develop a velvety texture, precise architecture, and silky tannins, with aromas of pepper, tobacco, humus, and undergrowth emerging. Food pairings for this mature Pinot Noir include classic choices like duck, goose, and other game birds, as well as filet mignon and ripe cheeses. This exceptional 1978 vintage is ideal for a milestone anniversary, a significant birthday celebration, or a contemplative evening for a true connoisseur appreciating the nuances of a well-aged Burgundy.
BACKGROUND
Joseph Drouhin is one of Burgundy's most important wine producers, France. The primary grape variety is Pinot Noir, with a small portion being Chardonnay. Founded in Beaune in 1880, the domaine has expanded throughout the 20th Century to include vineyards in Chablis, the Côte de Nuits, the Côte de Beaune and the Côte Chalonnaise, making everything from simple, village-level cuvées to highly priced grand cru and premier cru wines from Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
