FEATURES
The 2009 Pierre Usseglio Châteauneuf-du-Pape hails from a great vintage, showcasing the multi-generational winemaking legacy of the Usseglio family. Now managed by Pierre Usseglio's sons, Jean-Pierre and Thierry, this estate boasts some of the oldest Châteauneuf vines, averaging 80 years across three distinct plots. This vintage is typically a blend of 82% Grenache, 10% Syrah, and 8% Cinsault and Mourvèdre, aged in a combination of concrete tanks and barrels or foudres.
This red wine presents a beautiful ruby/purple color. On the nose and palate, it offers a complex array of aromas and flavors, including cherries, spices, garrigue, and black cherries. Further exploration reveals notes of kirsch, incense, roasted meat, licorice, lavender, and tobacco leaf, alongside deep red and dark berry aromas, blackberry, and candied lavender. It is full-bodied, rich, intense, and mineral-driven, with soft berry fruit, dusty tannins, a plush, evolved mouthfeel, and sweet tannins.
🍴 This Châteauneuf-du-Pape is an excellent companion to heartier stews, rich meat dishes, and grilled meats.
🥂 The 2009 vintage is enjoyable now, but it also possesses the structure and depth to continue aging gracefully for several more years. It's a superb choice for special occasions or as a tribute to fine winemaking.
Serving Advice: As a wine with 17 years of age, this 2009 vintage should be handled with care. Decanting for an hour or two is recommended to allow it to open up and to separate any potential sediment. Be mindful of older corks, which can be fragile; a specialized corkscrew like a Durand may be beneficial. Serve at a cellar temperature of approximately 16-18°C (60-64°F).
