FEATURES
Fontodi winery is nestled in the heart of Chianti Classico, within the unique "Conca d'Oro" (golden shell) amphitheater. The Manetti family, owners since 1968, have consistently focused on enhancing grape quality through organic and biodynamic methods. Flaccianello della Pieve is a 100% Sangiovese wine, crafted from grapes sourced from a single vineyard. It is intentionally classified as IGT Toscana, a choice made because the appellation rules in 1981 were deemed too restrictive for the producer's quality aspirations. Consequently, it is regarded as a "Super Tuscan," representing a pure Sangiovese that transcended DOCG regulations. The 2011 vintage was notably warm, leading to a rapid development of sugar and phenolic ripeness. The 2011 Flaccianello is described as beautiful and seamless, exhibiting great opulence and textural richness. It represents a more muscular style for this wine, reflecting the characteristics of the vintage. Tasting notes reveal a seamless expression with lingering tones of red cherry, coffee, spice, truffle, and red rose. It offers flavors of violet, black currant, raspberry, and spice, building to a lengthy conclusion. The wine displays a rich, deep dark ruby color with a slight purple hue. Pronounced savory notes of cloves and cardamom emerge, followed by dark pepper and rich red berries. Further complexities include sour cherry and dark plum, dried herbs, tobacco leaf, some leather, and a characteristic Sangiovese spiciness, reminiscent of balsamic and crushed stone flavors. Oak notes of cedar and sweet spices are present but harmoniously integrated behind the fruit. It boasts high acidity and firm, fine-grained tannins, resulting in a concentrated yet not heavy wine with a long, savory, and mineral finish. Additional aromas of blackberry, currant, nutmeg, and chocolate contribute to a full body with velvety tannins and abundant savory fruit, underpinned by balsamic and citrus notes. Menthol tones can also be detected on the finish. 【A pure Sangiovese "Super Tuscan" that went beyond DOCG rules for quality】
Food pairing suggestions: This wine is an excellent companion for beef and venison. Traditional Tuscan pairings include Bistecca alla Fiorentina (rare, with salt and olive oil), Pappardelle al cinghiale (wild boar stew), Peposo (beef stew with black pepper), and aged Pecorino Toscano. It also pairs well with lamb, bavette, duck, and various red meats.
Event suggestions: This powerful and structured Sangiovese requires time to soften, making it an ideal choice for a special dinner where it can be decanted and savored with rich, savory dishes. It truly embodies the "Super" in Supertuscan, perfect for impressing connoisseurs or celebrating significant milestones.
