FEATURES
The 2006 Aalto PS (Pagos Seleccionados) from Ribera del Duero, Spain, is a highly acclaimed red wine, primarily made from Tempranillo (Tinto Fino) grapes. It is the estate of the renowned Mariano Garcia, former winemaker at Vega Sicilia. The "PS" designation stands for "Pagos Seleccionados," meaning selected single vineyard sites, highlighting its origin from very old (60-100 years) goblet-pruned vines grown on loamy and sandy soils at 850m elevation. The wine was aged for 32 months in 70% new French oak, or in some cases, 30 months in new French oak after malolactic fermentation in casks.
This vintage has received significant critical praise, including a 96-point rating from Robert Parker and a 97-point rating from Wine Enthusiast. It's described as a glass-staining, super-expressive wine with an aromatic array of pain grille, crushed stone, lavender, spice box, and blackberry. On the palate, it's firm and structured, with intense, succulent, spicy fruit, ripe tannin, and impeccable balance. Other tasting notes mention char, leather, saturated black fruit, chocolate, vanilla, caramel, coffee, and mocha, reflecting its oak aging. Jancis Robinson noted deep garnet with a touch of brick, black tea and truffle maturity, with plenty of chocolate and cinnamon oak over dried-cherry fruit, and resolving, firm tannins taking on a velvet texture. It's a powerful, lengthy effort, with a drinking window suggested from 2016 to 2036.
